Bridgend's Brian Beats Berkshire Bob

A special report from Fish and Chip correspondent, Alun Tudor Jones

Yet another Bridgend man has entered the record books. Following fast on the trail of David 'spare balls' Carver, Keith Kawasaki, Robert Hurley and The Bass Boys, retired travel operator Brian Clement, 72, has 'tasted gold' by becoming Champion Chip Eater of the World.

Mastication 'Berkshire Bob' (pictured extreme left) has already had his chips, as Clem masticates effortlessly on his way to a new world record, aided by former schoolmate, David Carver

Bag-to-Bag

The long awaited 'bag-to-bag' confrontation with former champion Robert Cunningham (55) from Reading took place on Saturday, February 7th, 2004, in Laugharne, Carmarthenshire, in front of a small, but animated audience.

Piper

Clem's successful bid to break the record of 25lbs of fried Maris Piper Specials within an hour was meticulously witnessed and photographed by the Boston Globe's chief photographer.

Sponsorship

Rather full, but happy, the champion chomper acknowledged, with accustomed humility:

"If it were not for the generous sponsorship of a few old friends, I'd never have done it. I didn't have to buy a single chip".

STOP PRESS

Brian Clement has immediately relinquished his title after receiving a bill for £38.90p plus VAT from 'The Castle View Fish and Chip Shop', Laugharne.
